When did it start?

It started in the mid 80’s I suppose. As a family-owned business, we have expanded in line with increasing numbers of customers. We started off as family owned, and we see all the customers like family, quite a lot we know by first names.

What was it that made you want to start this business?

I chose to work in this industry as I always wanted to help others. I enjoy working outside much of the time and every day is something new.

What was the toughest thing you went through when opening?

That’s easy to answer. Well, there are two things. Customers and making sure we had enough. The second is taxes and making sure we didn’t have too many. You can’t have the one without the other I suppose.

If you had to start over from day 1 what would you have done differently?

Back then I would have said get the help of an accountant early on. If it were now, I’d say get online as soon as is possible? No matter where you can advertise yourself you have to do it if you don’t someone else is.

What is the toughest part about having a business in 2017?

It’s got to be competition. All these other people who have worked for someone else over the years and decided to give it a go. They have no idea of the costing side and undercut prices just to scrape by half the time.

If a customer was to choose between your business and 3 others just like it why would you suggest they at least give you a try first?

As I said, we are a family owned business, and that reflects in the way we operate. Customers are more than just a leaky pipe and a telephone number. It means something to us to help fix people’s problems.

What is the number 1 way you currently bring in new customers?

Not counting word of mouth it has to be online reviews. We make sure we are careful with the reviews we get. You can’t please everyone, but so far we have managed to do a pretty decent job.

Has the Internet played a big role in your business as it has become more prevalent?

Sure it has. Not everyone knows what services you offer, and there aren’t many people who want to stand on the phone asking all these questions about what you can fix or can’t fix. Along the line, either one of you is going to miss a point or two. Customers can see what you offer and then the choice is theirs.

If you had to look 6 months to a year into the future where would you like to see your business be?

With the customers we have. I would wish to be in precisely the same position. The chance of meeting so many friendly faces. I have the best job in the world. Of course, everyone would like to see their company grow. We never want to be so big we forget our roots.
